We All Need A Crash Course in Civics: Pre-Order Your Copy Today

To my Substack Followers and Subscribers

Thank you for inspiring me! When I started my Substack (civics4all.substack.com) in January, I knew I wouldn't be one of the people breathlessly reporting on every development of the Trump Administration. I have a "day job," so I don't have the time to write new articles and social media updates every day. Besides, I wanted to stay true to myself. I am not a journalist. I am an educator and a writer, so I decided to stay in my lane.

I wrote about educational issues, tried to warn people about the plans in Project 2025, and focused the bulk of my efforts on civic education. But as the anger, fear, and anxiety grew with each new political development, readers were lured away from educational content by the infamous outrage machine.

Now that we're eight months in to this administration, Trump's shock and awe strategy finally seems to be wearing off. This month alone, I have gained dozens of new followers and subscribers as people discover my old posts. I can only assume this is due to their hunger for information over outrage and solutions over inflammatory rhetoric. That's why I am starting this post with a love letter to the Substack community. Your thirst for knowledge has inspired me, and your search for solutions has helped me find my voice again. For that, I am eternally grateful. Look for more frequent posting from me moving forward. We have A LOT of work to do!

What's in a Name? Announcing An Important Title Change

As you know, my first book is scheduled to be released this December. If you follow me, you know that I've been telling everyone who will listen all about it. The book started as a passion project in 2019, but I didn't really get serious about writing it until 2023. I chose the title Civics for All: A Survival Guide to American Government and Politics because the 2024 presidential election season was starting, and that's what I thought Americans needed: a survival guide to help them get through the mess.

However, as any published writer will tell you, we rarely get to choose our own titles. My publishers, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to change the title of my book to make it more palatable and approachable for potential readers. Instead of a survival guide, the book is now called Civics for All: A Crash Course in US Government and Politics. It's a little Pollyannish if you ask me, but to be honest, I'm not mad at it.

When I wrote this book, I had no idea that it would be released on the eve of our nation's 250th birthday, in the midst of a second Trump Administration, at a time when he is literally challenging the way our schools and museums teach American history. I don't think anyone could have anticipated that a President of the United States would bully the Smithsonian into changing museum displays, force ivy league universities to remove certain courses, and withhold funding from K-12 schools across the country until they change their curriculum to his liking. It's truly bananas! America has strayed so far away from the system our forefathers created that it's going to be incredibly hard to find our way back.

At a time like this, we need civic education more than ever. We need to remember our history. We need to understand how our government was designed to operate and why our ancestors designed it this way. We need to understand how politics is supposed to work so we can use our votes and voices to hold politicians accountable. We need a "crash course" in US government and politics so that we can work together to fix what has broken instead of just trying to "survive" amongst the rubble.

About the Book

Civics for All: A Crash Course in US Government and Politics is the ultimate civics refresher course for everyday Americans. The book is scheduled for release this December, just in time for the 2025 holiday season.

Think of it as a one-on-one civics refresher course designed to help you learn on your time and at your own pace. I’ll be your personal guide on a journey through the history, structure, and functions of America’s government. Along the way, I’ll answer your most pressing questions about how government works and explain how we got to America's current political landscape.

This crash course will take readers on an educational journey through:

  • The history of civic education
  • The three branches of government
  • The role of political parties
  • America’s founding and the Declaration of Independence
  • Citizenship and immigration
  • The Constitution (including all 27 constitutional amendments)
  • Elections and public opinion polling

You can even test how much you've learned with more than 50 quiz questions in the book's appendix! Along the way, I include commentary, personal stories, and a little bit of humor to keep things interesting.

The journey wraps up with a call to action for all Americans. We need to start thinking outside of the classroom when it comes to civic education and take responsibility for educating ourselves about the way our government and political system work. It's time for a civics community education movement.
